Chapter 21

My vision tunnels and all I can focus on is the searing pain within me. I have never felt this sort of torture before. I want to die. I just want it to stop. That’s how bad it hurts.

“June!”

I’m lifted and feel myself being moved so quickly it makes my head spin. I try to react, open my eyes, say something to Zane, but I can’t.

Something is shoved into my mouth, and I gag.

“Throw up, June.” Tess. That’s Tess’s voice. “Go get me some wet towels!” I hear her yell.

I gag again as what I realize is her fingers go farther into my mouth. I can feel her nails as they scratch the back of my throat.

I vomit, and I don’t stop as my body is racked with pain. Tess turns me to my side and I feel a cold rag against the back of my neck.

My stomach recoils again and again. All I can hear is the wet splatter as my vomit hits something. My eyes flutter open but don’t focus.

“It”—I vomit again, choking on my words—“hurts,” I say. I gasp in air as my stomach finally stops its movement.

“Go grab some water and charcoal, Lisa!” I hear Tess say.

“June, you were poisoned. I need you to hang in there for me, okay?” Tess says.

I try to nod as my eyes close, but I don’t know if I do. There’s another searing pain in my stomach. My body trembles with a cold sweat, then everything goes dark.

My eyes flit open and for just a second, I feel like my entire life has been only a dream until this very moment. But as I turn my head and see a bloody Zane sitting on a black chair beside me, I know it hasn’t.

“Zane.” My words come out breathy as I swallow, trying to wet my dry sore throat.

His head lifts from his hands and he stands abruptly.

“June.” He leans over me and cups my face in his hands. “How are you feeling?” he asks, searching my face.

All I can do is look at him. There is blood splatter on his face, arms, and hands. Seeing my gaze travel over him, he releases my face and sits down on the bed beside me.

“I’m okay,” he says. “This blood isn’t mine.”

I nod. I don’t know how to react to that. “Whose blood is it?” I clear my throat as my words break.

“Here.” He scoops me up gently and places a straw against my lips. I take a few sips and my stomach cramps as the cold water collides with it. I flinch and push the cup away. Zane sighs heavily and lays me back down. “You were poisoned.”

I search his face. “What?” It had to have been the wine. The food I had eaten was hours before.

“We are looking for the person responsible. Silas and some other lords seem to think that you weren’t the intended target.”

I ponder his words. “Well, poison doesn’t work on vampires, right?”

Zane shakes his head.
